Medical Expense Subsidies in Tokyo

There are various medical expense subsidy programs available for children, high school students, single-parent families, and individuals with disabilities who live in Tokyo. Each program has specific eligibility criteria and coverage details to help families and residents manage medical costs.

Medical Expense Subsidy Program for Infants (Maru-nyu)

Those who are raising children who have not yet reached compulsory school age (up to the first March 31 after the child turns six) and have a registered address in one of the wards, cities, towns, or villages of Tokyo.

Medical Expense Subsidy Program for Schoolchildren (Maru-ko)

Those who are raising children of compulsory school age (from the first April 1 following the day the child turns six, until the first March 31 following the day the child turns fifteen) and have a registered address in one of the wards, cities, towns, or villages of Tokyo.

Medical Expense Subsidy Program for High School Students (Maru-ao)

Those who are raising high school–age children and have a registered address in one of the wards, cities, towns, or villages of Tokyo.
“High school–age children” refers to those in the high school age range (from the first 1 April following the day they turn 15, until the first 31 March following the day they turn 18), regardless of whether they are actually enrolled in a high school.
In addition, if a high school–age child is not under the care of anyone and is recognized by the municipality, the child themself may be eligible to receive the subsidy.

Medical Expense Subsidy Program for Single-Parent Families (Maru-oya)

1. A mother or father in a single-parent household who is caring for a child.
2. A guardian (foster parent or caregiver) who is raising a child without parents.
3. A child who is being cared for by a parent or guardian as described above, up to the end of the fiscal year in which they turn 18 (or under 20 years of age if the child has a disability).

Medical expense subsidy programs for the physically and mentally handicapped (Maru-sho)

Those who have a registered address in Tokyo and fall under one of the following categories:
1. Holders of a Physical Disability Certificate of Grade 1 or 2 (Including Grade 3 for internal disabilities related to the heart, kidneys, respiratory organs, bladder, rectum, small intestine, immune function due to HIV infection, or liver function.)
2. Holders of an “Ai no Techo” (Love Passbook) of Grade 1 or 2 (for persons with intellectual disabilities.)
